CARBONDALE, Ill. – Redshirt-junior Logan Calvin highlighted day one of the Don DeNoon Invitational, winning both the shot put and the weight throw with personal-best throws that rank among the best in the nation.
Calvin won the weight throw with a mark of 20.83 meters (68-4.25 ft.), ranking him No. 1 in the Missouri Valley Conference, No. 3 in Illinois State school history and No. 15 in the NCAA currently. Prior to this season, Calvin was not ranked on the ISU top-10 list for the weight throw, but has now moved up the list twice during his 2021 campaign. In the shot put, Calvin recorded a one centimeter personal-best of 18.51 meters (60-8.75 ft.) to improve upon his No. 2 mark in school history. His throw today ranks No. 2 in the Valley and No. 21 in the NCAA.
Hurdler Brandon Ratliff also posted an impressive performance for his sophomore season debut, winning the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.09 seconds. Ratliff's time is the fastest time in the MVC so far this season and ties him with former Redbird James Brandenburg for the No. 4 spot on the ISU indoor top-10 list.
Collectively, the Redbirds won seven events including the shot put, weight throw, long jump, triple jump, 800-meter run, 60-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay. Both making their season debuts today, junior Caleb Miedema and freshman Khalil Ross finished first in the long jump and triple jump, respectively. Miedema leaped to a mark of 6.92 meters (22-8.5 ft.) in the long jump, while Ross posted a mark of 13.16 meters (42-2.25 ft.) in the triple jump.
Sophomore Riley Wells was able to lean past teammate Jake Gillum to take the win in the 800m, recording a personal-best time of 1:53.14 which is currently No. 1 in the conference. Gillum placed second in the 800m, clocking in at 1:53.80.
Rounding out the individual event winners was senior Brandon Gage, who ran a personal-best time of 22.30 seconds in the 200-meter dash to edge past fellow Redbird junior Micah Amerson who came in second with a time of 22.68 seconds.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Gage, Jalen Hunter, Cole Maguire and Wells beat SIU by nearly six seconds with a time of 3:24.82 to cap off day one with a win.
The women's team will begin competition tomorrow at 10 a.m. starting with the weight throw and the pole vault. Fans are not allowed to attend, but live results will be posted here.
In accordance with state and local guidelines, fans are currently not allowed to be in attendance at home ISU Athletics events. Game dates, opponents, times and locations are subject to change.
