MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Illinois State baseball team was topped 6-4 and 2-1 in a doubleheader by Milwaukee on Saturday at Franklin Field.
Fourth-year junior Colin Wyman stole the show for Illinois State (12-21 overall, 4-4 MVC), tossing five perfect innings in game two out of the Redbird bullpen on just 43 pitches.
Fourth-year junior Aidan Huggins had four hits and an RBI on the day to highlight ISU's offensive performances.
Milwaukee (15-15 overall, 12-8 Horizon) swiped six bases in game one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
Second-year freshman Jordan Lussier retired the first eight Panthers he faced.
The Redbirds had two runners cut down at the plate in the 4th inning while the Panthers broke through for a trio of runs in the inning before tacking on three unearned runs in the 5th.
ISU responded with four runs in the top of the 6th. Second-year freshman Ryan Cermak doubled for 2 RBIs before RBI singles from fourth-year sophomore Jake McCaw and third-year sophomore Gunner Peterson.
Illinois State got a runner on in the 7th and final inning but was unable to extend the game.
Game Two
MKE struck for the game's first two runs prior to an RBI single by Huggins in the 3rd inning.
Both offenses went cold the remainder of the game as Wyman set down 15 consecutive Panthers to keep the Redbirds within one run.
The Redbirds loaded the bases in the 9th inning, but the game ended as the right fielder threw out an ISU runner at the plate as he tried to tag on a fly ball.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORES
- Fourth-year junior Jack Butler extended his hitting streak to 11 games, the longest by a Redbird this season.
- Cermak extended his on-base streak to 22 games in game one but had the streak snapped in game two.
- First-year freshman Luke Cheng recorded five assists and one putout in each game. Fourth-year junior Nick Gile had nine assists between the two games. Both players did not make an error.
UP NEXT
Illinois State is scheduled for one more game at Milwaukee on Sunday before returning home to face Evansville.
