NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's soccer team held a decisive 17-5 advantage in shot attempts but were upended on a Drake goal with just 50 seconds remaining in Sunday's exhibition match at Adelaide Street Field.
In ISU's final tune-up before beginning the season on August 19 at Eastern Michigan, a 90th minute long ball sent in by a Drake defender proved costly for the 'Birds as it bounced over the Redbird keeper before being tapped in by the Bulldogs' Hallie Peak.
After putting limited pressure on the Redbirds' defense in the first 85 minutes, three of the Bulldogs' five shots came in the final 4:18 with its last attempt yielding the game-winner.
ISU put seven shots on-frame, led by two from fifth-year senior Sarah LaFayette, in addition to dangerous off-target attempts by sophomore Ashlee Bakaitis in the 63rd minutes and senior Logan Ziegler in the 87th minute.
The 'Birds are scheduled to open the fall 2021 campaign on August 19 at Eastern Michigan before its home opener against Illinois on August 22.
