Normal, Ill. - Illinois State Swimming and Diving hits the road for the first time this season as the Redbirds travel to Champaign, Illinois for a tri-meet with Illinois and Southern Illinois Friday at ARC Pool. Action is set to get underway at 3 p.m. CT.
LAST TIME OUT
The Redbirds cruised to a season-opening 218-81 win over McKendree at Horton Pool last Saturday. Illinois State won all but two events in the meet, including both relays.
Giulia Basco, Madyson Morse and Emma Feltzer all secured multiple wins in the meet while diver Eva Reyes sweep 1M and 3M against McKendree last weekend.
REYES, BASCO EARN MVC WEEKLY HONORS
Reyes and Basco received the first MVC Weekly honors of the season this week.
Basco was named the MVC Freshman of the Week after she contributed to three wins on Saturday. In her first collegiate race Basco swam the third leg of Illinois State's 400-yard medley relay, which posted a winning-time of 3:53.99. She followed it up with wins in both butterfly events, recording a 2:07.37 in the 200 and a 58.22 in the 100.
The defending MVC Freshman Diver of the Year, Reyes earned MVC Diver of the Week honors for the fifth time in her short career. She kept her unbeaten record at Horton pool intact with a sweep of 1M and 3M against the Bearcats. Reyes recorded a 285.9 in 3M and a mark of 288.9 in the 1M dive for two wins.
STRONG COLLEGIATE DEBUTS
Three Redbird freshmen posted a strong showing in their collegiate debuts Saturday. Basco highlighted a group that finished with four wins and contributed in both relay victories in the opener for the Redbirds.
Chloe Tyler secured a victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.57 while Ella Turken posted a 24.94 to win the 50-yard freestyle. Tyler also swam in both relay wins for Illinois State. Basco swam the 400-yard medley and Turken was the second leg of Illinois State's 200-yard freestyle relay win.
