GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – The Illinois State Redbirds close out their final round of the 2022 fall season with the second round stopped because of darkness with a handful of holes remaining to be played among the field at the 2022 Buccaneer Classic.
Each of the Redbird golfers have completed their two rounds, and ISU stands third with one day remaining in the tournament.
Host Charleston Southern – among the three other schools to complete their rounds – leads the field at +10. Western Carolina is the only other school ahead of ISU at +16, ahead of the Redbirds' +31. UNC Asheville (+41), Gardner-Webb (+45), Radford (+48), Winthrop (+63), Appalachian State (+64), Presbyterian (+72), and the Citadel (+130) round out the 10 schools in the field. Only Charleston Southern, Western Carolina, Illinois State, and Citadel have finished their rounds for the day.
Redbird senior Ali Schrock is in a tie of second place individually with a two-round 145 (74-71). Avalon Woodward (75-78) and Emma Rouger (73-80) are knotted with a handful of others tied for 14th. Kira Wolf (79-78) is tied for 26th, Vinisha Gunaseelan (80-79) is tied for 32nd, and Dani Grace Schrock (85-78) is in 40th.
Starting on the second hole, Ali Schrock opened his day with three consecutive pars before carding a bogey on her third hole of the day. She answered with two birdies and four pars over her next six holes to drop to one stroke under par. After a pair of holes that pushed her to three strokes over par, she came back with back-to-back birdies on two of her last three holes and closed the round with a two-over 74. Her second round opened with birdies on two of her first three holes, and she was never over par again during the round. She closed the second round with six birdies and seven pars for a one-under-par second round.
Woodward started on the first hole and a birdie on her second hole started the day well, as she ended the front nine with five pars and two bogeys, taking a one-over-par score into the turn. Her back nine saw four pars, a birdie and a bogey through the first six holes of the back nine, and ended her opening round three strokes over par. After opening the second round with four consecutive pars, before ending the front nine with a birdie, a par and three over-par holes, and made the turn at three strokes over par. Woodward's back nine saw four pars, a birdie and four over-par scores to take her to six over par in the round.
Rouger had a rough start to her day, opening with a bogey and a double bogey, standing at three strokes over par before she hit a hot stretch during the day. Over her next dozen holes she had eight pars and four birdies, turning the three-over aggregate score to -1; however, she closed with three bogeys and two pars to finish the round with a one-over 73. In her back nine she had 10 pars and a birdie, ending her day with an eight-over 80.
Wolf was among the Redbirds' scoring four during each of the two rounds on the day, opening the tournament with a seven-over 79 round in which she had a birdie and 10 pars. She followed that with a dozen pars in the second round for a six-over 78.
Gunaseelan had a trio of birdies in her opening round, to go with six pars, ending the opening 18 holes with an eight-over 80. She answered with a seven-over 79 in the second round, in which she had a dozen pars.
Playing as an individual, Dani Grace Schrock had a birdie and six pars on her opening round, finishing with an 85; however, ended her day with a six-over 78 in which she had a trio of birdies and seven pars for the round.
The field will finish the remaining holes tomorrow, and then roll on through to the third and final round of the tournament.
