DES MOINES, Iowa – The 'Birds were back in action as Illinois State men's tennis started their final fall tournament of the 2022 season. As ISU headed to Des Moines for the Drake Invite, they would see action against Denver and Drake on Friday.
The Redbirds would face off with University of Denver in both singles and doubles before battling the host Bulldogs in strictly doubles. After the first day was all said and done, the 'Birds unfortunately fell winless against the Pioneers. Meanwhile, the 'Birds would pick up one win against the host Bulldogs.
First, it would be ISU versus Denver in action in doubles. The Pioneers would not waste any time, taking all three doubles matches. The closest result came at number three doubles, as Olsen/Raicevic of Denver defeated Ming-Chieh Chiu and Caden Scarlett by a final of 7-6 (7-3).
Once singles play served off, Ming-Chieh Chiu would once again play one of the tougher matchups for ISU as he fell in the only three setter on Friday, falling 3-6, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7) to Denver's Olsen.
Other singles result between the Pioneers and Redbirds were: 6-1, 6-1 to Denver's Sancho at number one; 6-2, 6-1 to Denver's Cuesta at number two; Denver's Sallay pulling out the 6-3, 6-3 win from number three; Denver's Sriniketh winning 6-2, 6-2 at number four, and Raicevic of Denver winning 6-2, 6-3 at number five singles.
It would be quite similar once the 'Birds took on host Drake in doubles to wrap up Friday. Dominic Anderson and Caden Scarlett would pick up the lone ISU win, by a final of 7-6 over Blevins/Ecklund of the Bulldogs. Other doubles results were 6-4 at number two doubles and 6-2 at the number one spot, both going the way of Drake.
Illinois State will return to action Saturday at 10 a.m. as they will compete against Drake in singles.
