NORMAL, Ill. – The first day of the Redbird Invitational was a hot one on the courts for an early October tournament, but the Redbirds were not phased and picked up three doubles wins and 12 singles wins on the first day of action at the Gregory Street Courts.
The day began with one round of doubles action, as the Redbirds won three of our matches to open the day. The No. 1 team of Tomas Valencia and Christian Capacci rolled to a 6-0 win over Solomon Dunsirn and Jai Dutta of IU Indy. The No. 2 team of Adrian Dibildox and Manuel Pavia also picked up a win over Pumiphat Sukkho and CJ Kryscio of IU Indy by a final of 6-3. The No. 4 team of Caden Scarlett and Jett Leong were also winners, taking down Marquette's Vazquez and Vazquez by a score of 6-4.
In the first singles session, the Redbirds won six of eight matches with Valencia, Capacci, Dibildox, Tin Ostro, Leong and Scarlett all picking up straight-set wins over their opponents. In round two of singles play it was much of the same, as the Redbirds won six of seven matches played. Valencia, Capacci, Dibildox, Leong, and Scarlett were all double winners on the day, while Pavia joined them with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Gustavo Juarez of NIU to cap off the second round of singles.
The Redbird Invitational will wrap on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m., with two rounds of doubles followed by the final round of singles. Admission is free to the event and matches will start as soon as courts are available with a small break for lunch.
