Redbirds roll to wins over Evansville, Eastern Illinois

Evansville, Ind. - Illinois State Swimming and Dive dominated Saturday as the Redbirds took home a 216-71 victory over Evansville and a 232-55 win over Eastern Illinois in a double-dual at Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville, Ind. 

The Redbirds won all but one event over the Purple Aces and swept every event against the Panthers in what was a day full of victories for Illinois State. 

"I'm very happy with where we are at as a team right now," head coach Caitlin Hamilton said. "It was a busy semester of racing and we are in a good spot heading into the Purdue Invite later this month."

Highlights:

  • Illinois State took home both relay wins in each dual, which included a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Ria Dietz, Madyson Morse, Giulia Basco and Ella Turken posted a time of 1:46.46 while Delaney Boulden, Sydney Hoff, Olivia Gonder and Mia Snow recorded a 1:48.76 to grab second overall. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Illinois State's team of Ella Turken, Chloe Tyler, Mia Snow and Giulia Basco recorded a 1:37.49 for first place overall.
  • Freshman Giulia Basco secured four wins on the day with a first-place time of 1:56.10 in the 200-yard freestyle and a 57.67 for first in the 100-yard butterfly. 
  • Senior Madyson Morse also won multiple events Saturday as she took home victories in breaststroke events. She won with a time of 1:06.47 in the 100 and a 2:24.53 in the 200. 
  • On the boards, sophomore Eva Reyes swept 1M and 3M with another dominant day. Notably, she remained unbeaten in 1M on the year with an overall score of 278.70. Her mark of 275.40 also took home wins in 3M. 
  • The Redbirds went 1-2-3 in the 1000-yard freestyle, the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke. Makenna Licking bested her season mark and won in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:40.17. Chloe Tyler (100) and Cassidy Carey (200) won the backstroke events with times of 57.17 and 2:05.00. 
  • The Purples Aces took home first in the 200-yard butterfly, however Lauren Naeger's season-best time of 2:06.87 beat out the Panthers for first. 
  • Four other Redbirds also secured wins Saturday over both Evansville and Eastern Illinois. Ella Turken recorded two wins with her first-place mark of 24.53 in the 50-yard freestyle. Mia Snow finished on top in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.92. Meanwhile, Sydney Hoff won the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:13.92. Olivia Gonder's mark of 2:10.25 won the 200-yard. IM.
