JONESBORO, Ark. – Fifth-year senior Colin Wyman fired five scoreless innings on 42 pitches in relief to lead Illinois State in a doubleheader split Arkansas State (4-5) at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field on Saturday.
The 'Birds dropped game one, 2-1, before responding with a 7-1 win in game two.
Illinois State (5-4) got five runs in the 7th inning of game two on a two-RBI single from fifth-year junior Jake McCaw and a bases-clearing double from third-year sophomore Greg Nichols.
Fourth-year junior Derek Salata recorded a career-high eight strikeouts over six innings in game one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
Arkansas State scored a run in both the 2nd and 3rd innings to lead 2-0.
Sixth-year senior Aidan Huggins and fourth-year junior Connor Olson recorded a successful double steal in the 5th inning as the ASU catcher attempted to catch Huggins at second base. The throw got away, allowing Olson to score.
Fifth-year senior Nick Gile singled in the 9th inning before pinch-running first-year freshman JT Sokolove swiped second. The Redbirds were unable to cash in as ASU closed the game.
Game Two
Illinois State scored in the 2nd inning as Nichols grounded home Gile, who led off the inning with a double.
A two-RBI single by McCaw gave the 'Birds some breathing room and a 3-0 lead before Nichols cleared the bases with a three-RBI double.
ASU got one back in the 8th inning, but third-year sophomore Matt Darr recorded a 9th-inning RBI single in his first at-bat as a 'Bird to push the lead to 7-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Game One
- Third-year sophomore Cameron Mabee recorded two scoreless innings in relief.
- Flores made his first start as a catcher at ISU, previously recording starts at designated hitter.
- The 'Birds recorded six assists, five of which came from second-year sophomore Luke Cheng.

Game Two
- Fourth-year junior Justin Foy made his first start since 3/23/19 (while at Western Illinois). Foy recovered from Tommy John surgery and made his first appearance in 735 days on 2/27/22. Foy pitched a scoreless 1st inning before giving way to Wyman.
- Beauregard recorded his first start as a Redbird.
- Fifth-year junior Jared Hart recorded his sixth appearance of the season, throwing a scoreless 7th inning. He has given up just one run.

Illinois State is scheduled to play Tuesday at UT-Martin.
