TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Illinois State baseball team outhit Indiana State but fell by a 4-2 scoreline, in its Missouri Valley Conference-opening game on Friday at Bob Warn Field.
The Redbirds (9-10 overall, 0-1 MVC) outhit the Sycamores (14-7 overall, 1-0 MVC) by an 11-5 margin.
Fourth-year junior Derek Salata threw 5.2 innings with two earned runs while third-year sophomore Ryan Cermak had an RBI single.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Illinois State left a runner in scoring position in the 2nd and 3rd innings.
Indiana State plated runs in the 3rd and 4th innings to lead 2-0 before the 'Birds got one back on a 6th-inning wild pitch that plated sixth-year senior Aidan Huggins.
Indiana State responded with a run in the bottom of the inning but Cermak singled home a run in the 7th inning.
The Sycamores added an 8th-inning insurance run as the Redbirds made a pair of outs on the base paths in the final two innings.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Fourth-year junior Justin Schubert threw two innings without allowing an earned run.
- The Redbirds did not record a walk or hit-by-pitch at the plate for the first time since 4/23/2021.
- Illinois State had won two-straight MVC openers.
