BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – In its first of two Summit League matchups this weekend, Illinois State hosted Drake Friday afternoon at the Evergreen Racquet Club and it was the Bulldogs who came out on top, winning the match 6-1.
All three doubles matches were extremely close, with Drake winning at No. 2 by a score of 6-3, before the No. 1 duo of Arvid Hjalte and Zane Kohrs defeated Drake's Jeremy Schifris and Oliver Johansson, 6-4, to tie things up. That left the decision on the doubles point to court No. 3, where the Bulldogs pulled out a 7-6 (7-2) win in the tiebreaker to secure the early advantage.
ISU got off to a great start in singles action, as Nam Pham picked up a straight set win at No. 1 to tie the match at 1-1. However, the Bulldogs would then win the final five singles matches to come away with the 6-1 victory over the Redbirds.
The Redbirds wrap up their homestand Saturday, when they host North Dakota at 8 p.m. at the Evergreen Racquet Club in another Summit League contest.
