LAWRENCE, Kan. – Third-year sophomore Ryan Cermak blasted his 12th home run of 2022 and 5th of the week in Illinois State's 10-5 loss to Kansas at Hoglund Ballpark on Sunday.
The home run pulled the Redbirds (12-14 overall, 1-2 MVC) to within 5-3 of the Jayhawks (13-17) in the 5th inning.
Cermak finished the week with five home runs, 14 RBIs, and nine runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
KU scored five runs with two-outs in the 3rd inning to lead 5-0.
Second-year sophomore Luke Cheng singled in a run in the 4th inning before Cermak cut the deficit to 5-3 in the 5th inning.
The Jayhawks scored three times in the bottom of the frame before scoring two more in the 6th inning to lead 10-3.
An RBI single from second-year freshman Tyler Woltman in the 8th inning brought the 'Birds to within 10-5 but ISU could not bring another run across.
KU scored twice in the bottom of the frame before adding a pair of two-out runs in the 8th inning to seal the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Third-year freshman Zach Holcomb threw two scoreless innings in relief.
- Cermak, Cheng, and Woltman all recorded two hits.
- The Redbirds have lost 44-straight games when trailing at the conclusion of the 6th inning.

Illinois State is scheduled to play at Illinois on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. CT. The Redbirds topped the Fighting Illini on April 5, 10-1.
