First Inning Rally Leads Redbirds to 9-4 Victory Over DePaul

NORMAL, Ill. – Every Redbird player reached base safely at least once in Illinois State's (17-18, 7-4 MVC) dominant 9-4 win over the DePaul Blue Demons (17-19, 6-6 Big East) on Tuesday evening at Cacciatore Stadium.

Pitching Breakdown:

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was a very productive first inning for the Redbirds as the Blue Demons' pitcher struggled to find the strike zone. After four straight walks and an RBI the easy way for Jayden Standish, DePaul made a change in the circle. Emme Olson was one of the four walks which extended her reached bae safely streak to 27 consecutive games.
  • Freshman Abby Knight collected the Redbirds' first hit of the game on a single to left field to clear the bases, and Knight ended up on second after an error by the Blue Demons' left fielder. Addison Masching followed by smashing a single to right field, but ended up on third after an error, and Knight scored, putting the 'Birds up 5-0 with no outs in the inning.
  • The Redbirds were not done yet as Michele Calabrese singled to left field to score Masching and Illinois State led 6-0 after the first half inning.
  • The Blue Demons were able to cut their deficit to 6-4 as DePaul scored four runs in the home half of the inning, and by the time the first frame was over, a total of 20 batters had been to the dish between the two squads.
  • The Redbirds scored again in the top of the third as Calabrese crushed her first career home run to left field, picking up her second RBI of the day as well as her second hit in as many at bats.
  • Left field seemed to be the sweet spot for Illinois State as Standish, following an infield single by Olson, hit the Redbirds' second longball of the day, a towering two-run shot, putting the 'Birds up 9-4 after four innings of play.
  • After the first inning, the Blue Demons were shut down as starting pitcher Hannah Ross tossed six scoreless innings, surpassing her career high in strikeouts, tossing six, and throwing her sixth complete game of the season.
