NORMAL, Ill. – Hayden Wagner has been named an Assistant Coach for the Illinois State volleyball program, Head Coach Allie Matters announced Thursday afternoon.
"I am thrilled to welcome Hayden Wagner to our Redbird family as an Assistant Coach," Matters said. "Our values and blue-collar mentality aligned with one another immediately. Here at Illinois State, he will work primarily with our pin attackers and will be given a role in recruiting and film analysis."
Wagner joins the Redbirds after spending one season as a volunteer assistant coach with the women's volleyball program at the University of Cincinnati. In his role with the Bearcats, Wagner provided support to the director of operations, assisted with drills, oversaw technology and collected data to be used by the coaching staff and much more.
In addition to volunteering with the Cincinnati volleyball program, Wagner also served as the head coach of the women's 15-1 Ohio Premier Volleyball Club team where he developed practice plans and handled operations.
Wagner is a 2021 graduate of George Mason University where he was a member of the men's volleyball team. During his career at George Mason, Wagner earned AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors twice and concluded his collegiate career with 979 kills, 282 digs and 99 service aces.
"Hayden had a decorated playing career at George Mason and is motivated to give back to the sport that gave so much to him," Matters said. "Hayden values family, loyalty, and legacy. I am looking forward to the impact he will have on our program and am honored to be a part of his early coaching career."
