HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emme Olson was the first baserunner for the Redbirds as she reached on error in the top of the first with two outs in the inning, but did not come around to score.
  • Starter Hannah Ross was able to work out of a jam in the bottom of the first as the Panthers hit a two-out double to center field and Ross dealt a walk to the next batter. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, but Ross got a ground out to end the inning and leave the runners stranded on second and third.
  • Illinois State was busy on the basepaths again in the top of the fourth as Kaili Chval knocked the Redbirds' only hit of the day, a single through the left side, to lead off the inning. Olson then reached on a fielder's choice and Chval was out on the play. Again, Olson did not come around to score.
  • After the first inning, Ross retired the Panthers in order, nine up, nine down, through the fourth inning.
  • Still a scoreless game through four innings, Illinois State could not capitalize on a one-out walk drawn by Addison Masching in the top of the fifth.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, UNI drew a leadoff walk and the runner stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. With a Panther standing on third, Ross was able to get the first two outs of the inning herself, both strikeouts swinging. UNI hit a line drive to right field and it looked like a routine play, until the ball popped out of glove of the Redbirds' right fielder, and the first run of the game scored, unearned.
  • The Panthers proceeded to hit four consecutive singles which tacked on three more runs with two outs in the fifth. Another walk loaded the bases for UNI, and a grand slam sealed the deal, walking it off 8-0 after 4.2 innings played.
