Illinois State Falls in Tight 12-7 Decision as 8th Inning Swings Indiana's Way

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– Illinois State dropped a tight 12-7 final at Indiana as a close play at first base in the 8th inning went the way of the Hoosiers and ultimately resulted in an additional five runs being put on the scoreboard at Bart Kaufman Field on Tuesday evening.

Entering with the game tied in the 8th inning with bases loaded and one out, position player and first-year freshman JP Gauthier recorded a strikeout on the mound before inducing a ground ball to shortstop. Replay was not available after the call at first base went Indiana's way as fourth-year head coach Steve Holm ended up being ejected after the play gave IU (25-27 overall) the lead. The next batter hit a grand slam.

Fifth-year senior Nick Gile, third-year sophomore Greg Nichols, and second-year sophomore Luke Cheng all recorded a trio of hits as the Redbirds (19-28 overall) tied their season high with 15 hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Illinois State scored the game's first three runs as Cheng doubled in a run in the 3rd inning to score the game's first run.

ISU scored in each of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th innings while IU scored in each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings.

Gile recorded a key two-out, two-RBI single in the 5th inning while fifth-year junior Jake McCaw had a 6th-inning infield hit to push the ISU lead to 7-3.

The Hoosiers scored a total of seven runs in the 8th inning to take control of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Illinois State was seeking to beat its fourth different Big Ten team in 2022, which would have been the first time since 2005.
  • First-year freshman Ryan Weaver made his second appearance/start of his career, allowing just one hit in 3.2 IP. Both runs he allowed were unearned.
  • It was the first time that Illinois State had ever played at Indiana (eight meetings all-time)

UP NEXT

Illinois State is scheduled to host Missouri Valley Conference-leading Southern Illinois Thursday-Saturday to wrap up the regular season. ISU will play Tuesday in the MVC Tournament's single-elimination round but can be seeded anywhere from 5th-8th against an opponent to be determined.
