SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Illinois State baseball team had its season end with a 9-4 loss to Missouri State in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in a game that featured two rain delays, totaling more than four hours on Tuesday prior to postponement and a 13-minute rain delay at Hammons Field on Wednesday. The game concluded 20 hours and 50 minutes after starting.
Third-year sophomore Ryan Cermak provided a key two-run double to put the 'Birds up, 4-2, in the 5th inning before the first delay (three hours and 33 minutes). Missouri State homered in four-straight innings to take control prior to the second delay (unofficially 35 minutes).
Illinois State finishes 2022 at 20-31 overall while Missouri State (26-26 overall) is scheduled to play an opponent still to be determined at a time to be determined on Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Missouri State scored twice in the 3rd inning to open the game's scoring.
Illinois State recorded four singles in the 5th inning, prior to Cermak's two-run double to put the 'Birds in front at 4-2.
The game was delayed for 3:33 due to rain, forcing the exit of fifth-year senior Colin Wyman.
MSU homered in each of the next four innings to take control of the game.
After a 35-minute delay, postponement to Wednesday and another rain delay (13 minutes), the Redbirds got runners to second and third with one out in the 9th inning but did not score to conclude the game.
