IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Illinois State baseball pitching staff allowed a mere four hits in the Redbirds' 3-2 win at Iowa on Tuesday evening at Duane Banks Field.
Third-year sophomore Greg Nichols delivered the big blow of the game, a two-RBI double in the 3rd inning for the Redbirds (18-22 overall).
Iowa drops to 26-15.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawkeyes plated a run in the 1st inning. The 'Birds nearly tied the game in the 2nd inning but a close play at the plate went in favor of Iowa. Video replay was not available.
Nichols laced a two-RBI double into left-center to give ISU a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning before the Hawkeyes tied the game in the bottom of the frame.
The teams traded a trio of scoreless innings prior to an infield single from first-year freshman JT Sokolove in the 7th inning. Sokolove beat the play at first base, but the throw got away, allowing third-year sophomore Kayden Beauregard to score all the way from first base.
Fourth-year junior Kolton Scherbenske escaped a one out, first and third jam in the 8th inning before giving way to fifth-year junior Jared Hart, who record his second save.
