COLUMBIA, Mo. – Using a four-under-par second round, Illinois State senior Ali Schrock tied the single-round Illinois State record with a 68, just the seventh time a Redbird golfer has eclipsed the 70-shot plateau.
Schrock ties with Rachel Powers who carded an opening-round 68 at the Cardinal Cup on September 17, 2012. Her two-round 140 has her in second place individually, trailing only Sarah Bell of Oral Roberts. She also joins Powers, Stacey Miller, Marisa Milligan, and Samantha Richdale as the only Redbirds to shoot a round in the 60's while as a member of the Redbird program.
As a team the Redbirds sit in eighth place in the field with a two-round 599 and are just seven strokes out of third place. Lipscomb leads the field with a two-round 580 while Missouri is four strokes behind with a 584. Northern Illinois (590), Florida International (595), Oral Roberts (595), Cal Baptist (597), and Eastern Kentucky (598) sit just ahead of ISU. Trailing the 'Birds includes South Dakota (604), Bradley (606), Missouri State (613), Drake (613), Wichita State (614), Arkansas State (619), and the Missouri State "B" squad (633).
Schrock had a bogey free front nine as she opened with four pars before closing strong with three birdies in her final five holes of the front nine, taking a three-under score into the turn. She opened her back nine with a par which was followed by her only bogey of the round on the par-four 11th hole. She followed immediately with a birdie on the par-three 12th hole, and after five consecutive pars, she ended her round with a birdie on the par-four 18th hole, securing her share of the school record.
Avalon Woodward was the Redbirds' second scorer on the day as she finished with a three-over 75, a round that included a very strong back nine. She got off to a rough start and was four strokes over par through the first six holes; however, that is where she turned her round around, and closed her front nine with three consecutive pars to take a four-over 40 into the turn. A birdie on the 10th hole kick-started her strong back nine, as she followed with five consecutive pars, before a bogey on the 16th hole provided her only blemish on the final nine holes. She closed the day with a par and a birdie on the 18th hole for the three-over final score, which has her tied for 22nd individually in the tournament.
Vinisha Gunaseelan followed her opening-round 77 with an identical score in the second round, as she had nine pars and a pair of birdies in her second round, and her two-round 154 has her tied for 45th in the field.
Both Kira Wolf and Dani Grace Schrock shot second-round 80's, Wolf with 10 pars and Schrock with nine pars and a birdie to tie for the team's fourth counting score. For the two rounds Wolf has a 155, which is tied for 49th, while Schrock is tied for 63rd with a two-round 157.
The team returns to the course for the third and final day of the tournament on Wednesday morning at the Club at Old Hawthorne.
