The Redbirds never trailed in the contest, and scored the first five points of the game on a Poindexter three-pointer and a Lieb lay-in. Long Beach State fought back with five consecutive points to knot the score, before the 'Birds scored 10 straight points to stretch the lead to 10 at 15-5. The first half lead grew to as many as 11 points, and was shrunk to as few as four, with ISU taking an eight-point, 32-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Illinois State came out strong to start the second half, using an 11-2 run over the first six minutes to stretch the lead to its largest at 17 points. Long Beach State fought back as the Redbird offense struggled, and The Beach scored 12 consecutive points to close the gap to five with 8:54 to play in the contest. The lead yo-yo' d back and forth for the next four and a half minutes, and leading by five with 4:19 to play, ISU proceeded to out-score LBSU 13-9 down the stretch to pick up the nine-point win over the team that had beaten Michigan in its last outing.
Messiah Thompson scored a team-high eight points for Long Beach State, while AJ George and Lassina Traore each scored eight. Traore also pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, as the Redbirds held LBSU leading scorer Marcus Tsohonis – who came in averaging 22.8 points per game – to just five points in the contest.
