KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Illinois State men's tennis team opened a busy weekend of tennis on Friday afternoon in Michigan, as the Redbirds traveled to Kalamazoo to take on Western Michigan in a non-conference matchup. The Broncos took the early lead and never looked back, as they came away with a 7-0 win over the Redbirds.
WMU swept the doubles matches to take the early lead by winning the doubles point. Once the action moved to singles, they kept the momentum with a sweep of those matches as well to come away with the shutout victory. Tomas Valencia put up a fight in his match at the No. 3 spot, winning the first set before dropping the second and losing in a third-set tiebreaker.
The Redbirds are back in action on Sunday, when they host a doubleheader against Marquette (12 p.m.) and St. Ambrose (4 p.m.) at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.
