NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State baseball team never recovered from allowing four 1st-inning runs in Tuesday's 10-3 loss to Minnesota at Duffy Bass Field as Redbird pitchers conceded 12 hits and 11 free passes.
Illinois State (6-9 overall) also hit into two double plays in the first three innings while leaving the bases loaded in the 5th inning and stranding two baserunners in both the 7th and 8th innings.
Fifth-year senior Dylan Swarmer had a home run reduced to a triple after the umpire deemed he had missed home plate to go with a pair of singles to lead the Redbirds. Second-year sophomore Noah Rabin also had a trio of hits.
The Golden Gophers improved to 4-18 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Highlighted by four 1st-inning runs, Minnesota scored the game's first six runs.
The Redbirds got on the board in the 5th inning via an error and bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to cut the deficit to 6-2 but the Golden Gophers responded with a pair of runs in the 6th inning.
Swarmer smacked a 405-foot home run to plate Rabin in the bottom of the inning but was ruled out after the home plate umpire ruled that Swarmer had not touched home plate.
Minnesota added a pair of runs in the 9th inning.
