Illinois State Rallies to Beat Southern Illinois, 5-4

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Illinois State baseball gave up a trio of runs in the opening frame but rallied to upend Southern Illinois, 5-4, on Saturday at Itchy Jones Stadium.

Illinois State (16-23 overall, 5-12 Missouri Valley Conference) tied the game in the 8th inning on an RBI single from fourth-year junior Shaydon Kubo before taking the lead in the 9th inning on an RBI single from freshman Daniel Pacella.

Third-year junior Auggie Rasmussen had a two-run homer to go with a pair of other hits while fourth-year junior Erik Kubiatowicz recorded the win after throwing two scoreless innings.

Third-year junior Elijah Dale threw a scoreless 9th inning for the save and fourth-year junior Cameron Mabee threw six innings, allowing two earned runs.

Southern Illinois moves to 24-19 overall, 11-6 MVC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SIU scored three times in the opening frame before the 'Birds got on the board from a base hit by second-year sophomore JT Sokolove in the 2nd inning.

The Salukis led 4-1 through four innings but Rasmussen's two-run shot drew ISU to within a run after five innings.

Pacella recorded a jumping catch on the warning track to end the 6th inning on a ball that would have plated at least two Salukis as the bases were loaded.

Kubo's RBI hit in the 7th inning tied the game prior to Pacella's go-ahead RBI hit in the 9th inning.

Dale allowed a leadoff single in the 9th inning but recorded back-to-back strikeouts with runners on second and third to seal the win.

  • Rasmussen's on-base streak moves to 19 games, the longest by a Redbird this season.
  • Rasmussen hit his ninth home run of the season.

  • Dale tallied his fourth save of the year, and his three strikeouts bump him to 45 on the season.
