CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Illinois State baseball gave up a trio of runs in the opening frame but rallied to upend Southern Illinois, 5-4, on Saturday at Itchy Jones Stadium.
Illinois State (16-23 overall, 5-12 Missouri Valley Conference) tied the game in the 8th inning on an RBI single from fourth-year junior Shaydon Kubo before taking the lead in the 9th inning on an RBI single from freshman Daniel Pacella.
Third-year junior Auggie Rasmussen had a two-run homer to go with a pair of other hits while fourth-year junior Erik Kubiatowicz recorded the win after throwing two scoreless innings.
Third-year junior Elijah Dale threw a scoreless 9th inning for the save and fourth-year junior Cameron Mabee threw six innings, allowing two earned runs.
Southern Illinois moves to 24-19 overall, 11-6 MVC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SIU scored three times in the opening frame before the 'Birds got on the board from a base hit by second-year sophomore JT Sokolove in the 2nd inning.
The Salukis led 4-1 through four innings but Rasmussen's two-run shot drew ISU to within a run after five innings.
Pacella recorded a jumping catch on the warning track to end the 6th inning on a ball that would have plated at least two Salukis as the bases were loaded.
Kubo's RBI hit in the 7th inning tied the game prior to Pacella's go-ahead RBI hit in the 9th inning.
Dale allowed a leadoff single in the 9th inning but recorded back-to-back strikeouts with runners on second and third to seal the win.
