COLUMBIA, Mo. – A final 10 holes that saw the Redbirds record a dozen birdies has Illinois State in 13th place at the 2023 Johnie Imes Invitational, hosted by the University of Missouri.
Florida International leads the field with a blistering 282 (-6), while Lipscomb was also under par with an 18-hole score of 286 (-2). Morehead State (290), tournament host Missouri (294), Missouri State (295), Oral Roberts (296), Eastern Kentucky (296), Howard (297), Drake (298), Creighton (304), Omaha (305), and Northern Illinois (308) all sit just ahead of the Redbirds with 36 holes remaining in the three-day tournament.
Leading the way for the team for the fourth consecutive round to open the season was Jinyoung Yun, who used two birdies and 13 pars over her opening 18 holes to finish the day with a three-over-par 75, including a final 10 holes in which she was two under par with eight pars and two birdies, helping her to a tie of 36th place after one round.
Avalon Woodward – an All-MVC honoree for the last two seasons – was second for the Redbirds on the day with a balanced round, carding a two-over 38 on both the front and back nine-hole sections. Her four-over 76 has her tied for 41st overall in the field a third of the way through the tournament.
Both Ali Schrock and Vinisha Gunaseelan shot rounds of 80 (+8), with Schrock using four birdies and five pars, while Gunaseelan had three birdies and seven pars, as the pair are tied for 63rd. Sophomore Dani Grace Schrock had nine pars in her opening round, and her 83 has her 70th in the tournament field.
The Redbirds take back to the course on Tuesday morning, starting at 8:18 a.m. at the Club at Old Hawthorne.
