NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's basketball squad set a new program record with 20 made three-pointers – the second-most in MVC history – as the Redbirds ran away with a 107-52 win over the Trinity Christian Trolls on Sunday afternoon.
For the Redbirds, of the 11 players who saw action, 10 reached the scoring column, led by 28 points from Jack Daugherty, as the freshman made 8-of-15 shots from long range, which ties the Illinois State school record for makes and attempts in a single-game. The 28 points is also the seventh-most in a game by a freshman in school history.
Four other Redbirds: Dalton Banks (14 points), Landon Wolf (14 points), Johnny Kinziger (13 points) and Chase Walker (12 points) all scored in double-figures, while Ty Pence (nine points) was a single point away from giving ISU a sixth.
Jordan Davis and Caden Boser each pulled down six rebounds to lead the Redbirds, as ISU had 46 total rebounds, and a +27-rebounding margin. The margin is tied for the 16th-most in a game in school history, while the 19 rebounds allowed to Trinity Christian is tied for the ninth fewest in program history.
Banks' five assists are a team-high, as all 11 players who saw action had at least one assist in the lopsided win, as ISU had a 26-to-9 assist-to-turnover ratio in the contest.
The Redbirds trek to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands for their next game, as the squad will compete in the Paradise Jam, opening with McNeese on November 22.
Illinois State scored the first six points of the game, and never trailed in the contest. A 10-0 ISU run in the first half extended the margin to 24, as ISU took a 21-point, 44-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Redbirds had runs of 11-0, 7-0, and 12-0 in the second half, extending the margin to as many as 55, including at the final buzzer in the 107-52 win.
The Redbirds made 41-of-66 shots in the game for a percentage of .621, the second consecutive game in which ISU shot .600 or better, which is tied for the most-such games in the NCAA this season. ISU was 20-of-40 from long range, the 20 makes tied for second-most in MVC history while the 40 attempts tied for the sixth-most in the history of the conference. Illinois State – which came into the game ranked fifth in the country in free throw percentage – made 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from the charity stripe.
Trinity Christian was led by Danny Staskunas, who scored 14 points while Tylan Harris scored 12 and Mac Parmelee 10.
