DAVIS, Calif. – After No. 12 Illinois State took an early lead, No. 5 UC Davis answered with 28 unanswered points as the Aggies (11-2) pulled away for a 42-10 win over the Redbirds (10-4) Saturday afternoon at UC Davis Health Stadium in the second round of the FCS Playoffs.
How It Happened:
• Illinois State took an early lead, as Tommy Rittenhouse connected on an 8-yard touchdown reception to Eddie Kasper to cap off a 7-play, 61-yard scoring drive to make it 7-0 in favor of the Redbirds with 11:15 left in the first quarter.
• UC Davis tied the game with 1:43 left in the opening quarter, when Lan Larrison scored from one yard out to knot the score at 7-7.
• The Aggies took a 14-7 lead on the first play of the second quarter, when Miles Hastings connected with CJ Hutton on a 10-yard touchdown with 14:55 left before halftime.
• A 27-yard run by Larrison then extended the Aggies lead to 21-7 with 9:38 left in the second quarter.
• Larrison scored his third touchdown of the game, this one from two yards out, to widen the UC Davis lead to 28-7 with 1:19 left before halftime.
• The Redbirds cut into the lead at 28-10, when Ian Wagner connected on a 22-yard field goal with just two seconds remaining before halftime to send the game to the break with the Aggies holding an 18-point advantage.
• The Aggies tacked on a touchdown with 8:06 left to play in the game, following a 64-yard reception by Larrison that set up an 18-yard touchdown pass from Hastings to Ian Simpson that made the score 35-10.
• Hastings threw his third touchdown pass of the game, a 3-yard fade to Chaz Davis, to make the score 42-10 in favor of the Aggies with 3:49 left to play in the game.
Game Notes:
• The receiving touchdown by Kasper was his first of the season and the second of his career.
• With his 68 yards rushing, Wenkers Wright moved over the 2,000 yard mark in his career making him just the 13th player in school history to achieve that mark.
• Sobkowicz finished with 111 yards, marking his fourth 100-plus yard effort of the season and his fourth in the last five games.
