NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team opened a brief homestand on Saturday with a split doubleheader at the Evergreen Racquet Club, as the Redbirds picked up 7-0 sweeps over Missouri-St. Louis and crosstown foe Illinois Wesleyan.
"Today was a great day for us collecting another couple of wins," ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. "We had some tough matches last weekend, so it was nice to get back on a winning streak."
In the first match of the day, the Redbirds jumped out to the early lead by winning the doubles point against the Tritons. Emiliano Gonzalez and Tin Ostro rolled to a 6-1 win over Juan Vigil and Raphael Kerndl and the No. 2 tandem of Tom Bevan and Arvid Hjalte took down Jose Mayorga and Joshua Mackey 6-1 to secure the first point of the match. As action moved to singles, the Redbirds swept things out in relatively easy fashion with each player winning in straight sets to secure the first victory on the day.
After a brief rest, the Redbirds returned to the courts against the crosstown Titans and once again got out to an early lead by winning sweeping the doubles matches to secure the first point of the night. Playing with some new pairings, Gonzalez and Hjalte teamed up to defeat Ryan McCoy and Ian Turnbull 6-2 at the No. 1 spot and Ming-Chieh Chiu and Caden Scarlett worked well together in a 6-0 win over Thad Dillow and Griffin Hammond. A win at the No. 3 spot by Adrian Dibildox and Valencia (ILS) would then secure the doubles sweep as the action moved to singles.
Those matches featured a different lineup for the Redbirds, with Dibildox playing in the No. 1 spot and picking up a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Straight-set wins by Gonzales (No. 2), Ostro (No. 3), Scarlett (No. 4), Chiu (No. 5) and Bevan (No. 6) capped off a solid day on the courts for the Redbirds with their second victory.
The Redbirds are back in action on Friday, March 1, when they open Summit League play against Omaha at the Evergreen Racquet Club, with first serve set for 12:30 p.m.
