ORLANDO – A spring break trip to Florida for the Illinois State men's tennis team ended on a high note on Monday, as the Redbirds picked up a 4-0 sweep of Marist at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
The match began with a battle in doubles action, as ISU took the early advantage thanks to a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot by the team of Caden Scarlett and Tomas Valencia. After Marist picked up a win at the No. 2 spot, the decision on the doubles point came down to court No. 1, where Tin Ostro and Emiliano Gonzalez defeated Marist's Jose Catala and Nick Suhanitski by a score of 6-4 to secure the first point of the match.
Singles also got off to a great start for ISU, as Nam Pham picked up a 6-2, 6-4 straight set win over Jose Catala at the No. 1 spot to go up 2-0. A win at the No. 5 spot by Gonzales and a victory at the No. 6 spot by Ostro would then clinch the 4-0 win for the Redbirds, as the remaining three matches were left on the courts unfinished.
Illinois State returns to the courts on Friday, March 22, when the Redbirds head to Boise, Idaho, to compete in the three-day Boise State Invite.
