NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Illinois State baseball fell for the second straight day, 7-2, at Hawkins Field to #9 Vanderbilt Saturday as the Commodores scored five runs over the 5th and 6th inning to secure the victory.
Illinois State (5-7 overall) got an RBI double by senior Greg Nichols and a run scored from both Tyler Herron and Luke Cheng.
Vanderbilt moves to 13-3 overall in 2024.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Vanderbilt got on the board first in the 2nd inning off a fielder's choice and a groundout to the pitcher, taking an early 2-0 lead.
After a Luke Cheng double, it was an error by the Commodore shortstop that would allow Luke Lawrence to reach and Cheng to come around and score in the 3rd inning.
Vanderbilt would increase the lead in the 5th off an RBI single to stretch the lead to 3-1 after five innings.
The Commodores would add four more runs in the 6th before it was senior Greg Nichols driving in a run for ILS in the top of the 7th inning to make it 7-2 Vanderbilt.
