NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State Soccer (2-5-1, 0-0-0 MVC) suffered a 2-0 setback Sunday to Butler (5-2-1, 0-0-0 Big East) at Adelaide Street Field in the non-conference finale for both sides.
Butler struck early in the 7th minute as Abigail Isger scored directly off a corner kick. Illinois State battled and nearly tied the game just before the end of the first half as Josie Spann beat her defender and took a dangerous shot that went wide left. The Birds earned a corner kick with seconds remaining in the first half but couldn't convert.
The Bulldogs scored early in the second half as well after a corner kick came loose in the box and set up a goal from Talia Sommer. From there Butler closed out the victory.
Ava Watson led Illinois State with a pair of shots, one that went on frame in the 76th minute. Freshman Maggie Dowling accounted for the other shot on goal for the Redbirds.
Butler controlled opportunities, leading shot count 12-5 and holding an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Madi Valenti tallied five saves for Illinois State, including three in the first half.
