Redbird History at the Redbird Invitational: Last season the Redbirds took second at their home event, finishing with a three-round team score of 866 with rounds of 284, 293, and 289. At the time, ISU's 866 was a new program record for lowest tournament score, and the 284 set the program record for lowest single-round score (later tied and broken two other rounds during the year). Jinyoung Yun was the individual runner-up with a program-record 204 at the event, and her two rounds of 67 set a new individual tournament round record (later tied two more times by Yun).
About the Course: The Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University was designed in 1962 by golf course architect Robert Bruce Harris. It was originally designed with a regulation length nine-hole course along the outside edges of the property with a shorter executive length 9 hole course in the middle. The course opened in May 1964 with University President Robert Bone hitting the first shot. During the 2000 season the course was closed to undertake an extensive renovations project designed and coordinated by PGA Champions Tour Player and ISU Alumnus D.A.Weibring and his company Golf Resources, Inc. The project included the installation of a new state of the art irrigation system, rebuilding all 18 greens and 2 practice greens, converting the tees and fairways to bentgrass, and reconstructing all bunkers to include drainage, Bunker Guard erosion control, and tour-quality Best Sand. The University Golf Course reopened for play in July 2001 to positive reviews throughout the state. In September 2007 the golf course was renamed to Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State in honor of DA and his many contributions to the ISU Men's and Women's Golf Teams, the golf course, and the university in general.
