NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State freshman Jack Daugherty made 7-of-10 shots from long range and scored a game-high 25 points as the Redbirds out-lasted the Bradley Braves 82-71 in a rivalry win inside CEFCU Arena.
Daugherty's seven three-pointers are the second-most in a single-game total of his young career, and the third-highest total by a freshman in program history. He is the only freshman in the NCAA this season with multiple games of seven made three-pointers in a game. Johnny Kinziger scored 19 points, including making 9-of-10 shots from the charity stripe, while also tying his career-high with a game-high nine rebounds.
Chase Walker scored 13 points for the Birds, making 6-of-9 shots in the game as he also pulled down five rebounds. Dalton Banks scored 10 points with three assists and two steals. The Redbirds had a 16-to-4 assist-to-turnover ratio and committed five or fewer turnovers five times this season, the fourth-most such games by a team in the country this season.
The Redbirds take to the road for the team's next two games, starting on Saturday, February 22 at Missouri State, and is followed by a Tuesday evening battle with the Southern Illinois Salukis on February 25.
After Bradley scored first ISU ran off six consecutive points, to push ahead to a four-point lead. Over the next 15 minutes the lead changed hands seven times and was tied four times. Bradley's biggest lead came with 9:13 to play in the first half when the Braves jumped out to a five-point lead at 20-15; however, the Redbirds closed the first half strong, using a 20-7 run over the final seven minutes to stretch to an eight-point, 35-27 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Redbirds held the visitors at bay for the entirety of the second half, as BU was only able to close the gap to three and was at a two-possession margin for nearly the entire final 10:34 of the game. The Redbirds iced the game at the free throw line, outscoring Bradley 7-1 over the final minute of the game to bring home the 11-point win.
The Redbirds made 46 percent of their shots in the game (25-of-54), and 35 percent (11-of-31) from long range. Bradley was held to 44 percent shooting (27-of-61), while the Braves converted on 10-of-25 (40%) from long range.
The Braves were led by Zek Montgomery and Duke Deen who each scored 16 points, while Darius Hannah scored 15 and Demarion Burch 10.
