NORMAL, Ill. – Graduate student Boden Skunberg scored a game-high 20 points – the second consecutive game he has scored 20+ points in – as the Illinois State men's basketball team held on late for a 59-54 win over the Northern Iowa Panthers, as the Redbirds improve to 6-3 in MVC play and 14-6 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a highly-defensive opening 20 minutes, the two teams went back-and-forth with five tie scores and three lead changes for the first seven and a half minutes of the game. ISU's offense caught traction and used a 7-0 run to turn a 14-14 tie score into a 21-14 advantage, as the Birds took a 24-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Redbirds used an 11-0 run in the second half to stretch the margin to its high-mark of 13 at 35-22; however, the Panthers started to claw their way back, getting within as few as three at 57-54. The Redbirds iced the game at the free throw line, making all 11 of their tries in the second half to secure the three-point win over Northern Iowa.
