Heitzig, Plummer, Schedler Break Program Record on Day One of Larry Wieczorek Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Becca Heitzig, Mattison Plummer and Pauline Schedler now hold the top three spots in program history in the women's 1000m, sweeping the race on day one of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday evening. 

Heitzig clocked a personal-record time of 2:46.58 to win the event and beat the school record by over two seconds (2:49.01). Plummer followed closely behind with a personal-best mark of 2:48.55, and Schedler improved upon her third-best time in school history at 2:48.98 (previously 2:50.77). Freshman Brooke Zeibert moved into 10th on the all-time list in the same event with a mark of 2:54.71.

"The women executed the race plan well, trading off the lead and closing hard on the last lap. Very proud of them all," said head coach Jeff Bovee.

Freshman Logan Scott won the men's 1000m race, crossing the finish line in 2:27.99. Luke Barham finished runner-up in a personal-record time of 2:32.62. 

Sophomore Julian Baker won another event for the Redbirds, earning gold in the men's 3000m race with a personal-record time of 8:08:59 to move from ninth to sixth in ISU's all-time record books. Sophomores Blake Oleson and Will Gelon also posted personal-bests in the same event. Senior Maggie Reed finished second in the women's 3000m race.

Junior Colleen Zeibert took fourth in the 600m dash with a personal-record mark of 1:34.39.

The Redbird field athletes also recorded solid performances on Friday in Iowa City. Four Redbirds finished in the top 12 in the men's shot put, highlighted by freshman Zachary Cowper, who moved into 10th in program history with a personal-best mark of 17.56m. Freshman Joseph Atkins also posted a personal-record throw of 16.46m, improving upon his 16.32m toss at the Coughlan-Malloy Cup last weekend.

Sophomores Brianna Brodie and Morgan Foes achieved personal-bests in the women's weight throw. Brodie placed fifth in the event with a throw of 16.96m, while Foes finished sixth with a mark of 16.81m. 

Sophomore Sydney Skarich notched a personal best mark of 1.66m to finish third in the high jump, while senior Abby Milott placed third in the long jump. 

Freshman Voldy Makabu, senior Rob Pulliam and junior Kaden Stewart finished second, third, and fourth, respectively, in the men's high jump. Makabu posted a personal-best mark of 2.11m, while Pulliam set a personal-record jump of 2.08m. 

UP NEXT

The 'Birds will finish up the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Saturday afternoon, with the women's pole vault kicking things off at 1 p.m.
