Fourth Quarter Comeback Propels ISU To 91-87 Overtime Win At Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – Down by 11 points in the fourth quarter, Illinois State used a 14-0 run over the four-plus minutes of action to regain the lead late against Dayton on Thursday night. The Flyers would come back to tie the game and it would head to overtime, where Trista Fayta took over and scored five of her game-high 28 points to will the Redbirds (2-0) to a 91-87 overtime victory over the Flyers (1-0) at the UD Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
•    The Redbirds jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the contest and would go up by as many as nine points at 17-8 with 4:16 left in the first quarter after a three-point play by Hannah Chicken. The Flyers would battle back however, to cut the ISU advantage to just two points at 21-19 after the first 10 minutes of play.
•    Dayton would use a 7-0 run over the first two-plus minutes of the second quarter to take a three-point lead at 26-23, before a three-pointer by Fayta would give the Redbirds the lead back at 29-28 two minutes later. Dayton came right back and took the lead again, but a three-point play by Nevaeh Thomas and another trey by Fayta put ISU back up by four points at 37-33 with just over two minutes left before halftime.
•    Fayta would drill her third three of the quarter as time expired to put the Redbirds up by three at halftime.
•    ISU held onto a small lead until midway through the third quarter, when the Flyers took the lead at 51-49 after a pair of free throws. A three-pointer by Grace Nelson would give ISU the lead right back, but Dayton would go on a 6-2 run to go up by four at 57-53 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. That four-point lead of 61-57 would hold for Dayton heading into the fourth quarter, thanks to a pair of late baskets.
•    An 8-1 start to the fourth quarter for Dayton would put them up by 11 points at 70-61, but that's when ISU went on its run and scored 14-straight points over the next four-plus minutes, thanks to six points from Hannah Chicken and four points each from Thomas and Fayta.
•    After Dayton tied the game, Thomas scored four-straight points to give ISU a 78-74 lead with just over a minute left but that lead would not last as the Flyers tied the game with 20 seconds remaining. As time expired, it looked like the Flyers had one on a late three-point heave, but after review the shot was waived off, and the game went to overtime tied at 78-78.
•    In the extra period, Nelson scored five of the Redbirds' first seven points to put them up by two at 85-83, but the Flyers would once again knot things up at 85 all with two minutes left. That's when Fayta took over, as she scored five-straight points for the Redbirds to give them the lead for good and secure the victory for the Redbirds.

HIGHLIGHTS
•    The game was a close one throughout, as it featured 14 ties and 15 lead changes in 45 minutes of action.
•    It was ISU's first overtime win since a victory over Belmont last season on Feb. 20 at CEFCU Arena.
•    With the win, ISU improves to 4-3 in the all-time series against Dayton and have won the last three contests in the series overall against the Flyers.
•    Fayta led a quartet of Redbirds in double figures with a career-high 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field to go along with eight assist and eight rebounds … she is the only player in the country this season to have 28+ points, 8+ rebounds and 8+ assists in a single game and since 2009-10, there have been only three MVC players to post that stat line.
•    Thomas recorded her second 20-plus point effort of the year, as she finished with 20 points and just missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds in the win … she is the first Redbird to scored 20-plus points in the first two games of the season since Jamie Russell started the 2012-13 season with a pair of 20-plus point performances.
•    Transfer Hannah Chicken posted the second double-double effort of the season for the Redbirds, as she finished the contest with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
•    Freshman Danyella Mporokoso rounded out the double figure scorers for the Redbirds, as she scored in double digits for the second-straight game to start her collegiate career finishing with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists against the Flyers.
