NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State Athletics will discontinue its men's tennis program, effective at the end of the spring 2026 semester.
"We made this decision following a thorough analysis, evaluating a number of factors," Illinois State Director of Athletics Dr. Jeri Beggs said. "Decisions like this are never easy and it's with a heavy heart that we make this announcement. Our men's tennis student-athletes have represented the University well on and off the court, often setting the standard for academic achievement among all 19 sports. We are grateful to the student-athletes, past and present, and to head coach Maja Kovacek, who has led both the men's and women's programs for the past year."
Kovacek, who led the ISU women's tennis team to a Missouri Valley Conference team championship in 2026, will continue to coach the women's team moving forward.
The decision was announced to the men's tennis student-athletes following the conclusion of the 2026 spring season, which ended on April 24 at the Summit League Championships, helping to ensure the least amount of disruption to the team. The announcement also allows student-athletes time to decide if they want to enter the transfer portal, which opens on May 4. Five of the eight members on the 2025-26 roster are seniors, who have completed their eligibility.
Current tennis student-athletes will have their scholarships honored through the completion of their current degree programs if they choose to remain at the University. They will also continue to have access to support services available:
• Academic Support – academic advisors, learning specialists, study hall and tutors
• Medical and Athletic Training Access – athletic trainers, team physicians and rehabilitation assistance
• Mental Health Services – counseling and mental health support
• Nutrition Support – fueling, refueling and nutritionist support
• Student-Athlete Development – career services and leadership development opportunities
For student-athletes choosing to transfer, ISU Athletics will assist them throughout the process to ensure they find a new program.
Following this change, ISU Athletics will continue to sponsor 18 sports, four more than the NCAA mandated minimum of 14 for FCS schools.
