ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Illinois State senior Pietro Pontiggia has been named to the Missouri Valley Conference's Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete Team, announced by the MVC office on Wednesday morning.
Pontiggia, a senior who has a 3.51 grade point average in finance, is averaging 73.3 strokes per round during the season, and has 13 rounds this season at or under par, with one top 10 finish. The rounds at or under par is tied for the 21st-most in a season in school history, while his scoring average is just outside of the top 25 in program history for a season.
Over his outstanding Redbird career – which includes three MVC Championships after yesterday's tournament win – his 31 rounds at or under par are the 10th most in school history, and his career scoring average of 74.19 is 15th-best.
To meet the criteria, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically. Redshirt freshmen were not eligible. Nominees must have a 3.50 cumulative GPA, both as an undergraduate and graduate student, where applicable. Eligible nominees must be in the lineup for 50 percent of an institution's team scoring events or in the lineup at the conference championship.
The Redbirds are coming off their third MVC Championship in the last four years and will find out the location of the upcoming NCAA Regional next Wednesday.
