ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri Valley Conference has announced its May 5 selection of weekly awards on Tuesday morning.
Redshirt Sophomore Brayden Bakes and Junior Michael Carrano Jr. each received recognition in this week's selection of weekly honors.
Bakes was named the MVC Player of the Week, receiving his fourth recognition of the awards, which leads all players in the conference. Bakes earned the honor following another strong week at the plate for the Redbirds, with a combined 9-for-16 performance with seven runs scored, four RBIs, three doubles, and one home run across the week.
Bakes currently leads the Valley with a .395 batting average and 77 hits, which ranks sixth in the nation. In his last six games, the Algonquin, Ill. native has tallied two or more hits, as Bakes leads the Redbirds with a total of 26 multi-hit games this season.
Junior Michael Carrano Jr. earns his first MVC weekly honor after being named the MVC Newcomer of the Week for his contributions to the Redbirds' offense last week. Carrano Jr. combined for a 9-for-19 performance with eight RBIs and two home runs in four contests. On Saturday, Carrano Jr. notched a career-best four hits and four RBIs in Illinois State's 14-2 win over Valparaiso.
