Redbirds Earn Draw With UT Martin

NORMAL, Ill. — Illinois State soccer battled to a 1-1 draw with UT Martin on Sunday evening at Adelaide Street Field.

The Redbirds remain unbeaten and now sit at 2-0-1 on the season.

Illinois State controlled the opening half, holding the Skyhawks to three shots while generating seven of its own. The Redbirds also held a 57% possession advantage and earned three corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.

The Redbirds came out aggressive from the first whistle, putting two shots on goal in the opening seven minutes. Sosi Dadekian and Rylann Law both tested UT Martin before Grace Petrie opened the scoring in the 24th minute.

Petrie headed home a corner kick from Eve Gricius at the far post for her first goal of her career, giving Illinois State a 1-0 advantage.

Illinois State continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, recording seven shots and six corner kicks. The Redbirds finished the match with a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

UT Martin found the equalizer with less than five minutes remaining. The Redbirds had one final opportunity in the closing minutes, but their shot in the 88th minute went wide left as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Madi Valenti made four saves in goal for the Redbirds, bringing her career total to 176 saves and moving her into fifth place in program history.

The Redbirds hit the road for an in-state matchup against Northwestern on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT at Martin Stadium. The match will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
