Redbirds Close Play in Seton Hall Tournament with Sweep of Knights

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Illinois State closed strong at the Seton Hall Tournament, sweeping past the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on Sunday morning by scores of 25-18, 25-14, 25-21, earning the Redbirds a runner-up finish in the season-opening tournament, with junior Ruth Ziegler earning All-Tournament Team honors.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set (25-18): ISU scored the first two points of the set, and never trailed in the frame, and used a quartet of 3-0 runs to extend the advantage, cruising to a 25-18 opening-set win.

Second Set (25-14): After the teams were knotted at two apiece early in the second set, ISU ran off five consecutive points to stretch to a 7-2 lead. The Redbirds kept extending their lead – including a 4-0 run late in the set – to come away with a comfortable 25-14 second-set win.

Third Set (25-21): The Redbirds and Knights went back and forth to start the set, with ISU scoring and FDU matching through a 4-4 score, before the Birds exploded to four consecutive points – two of those on Ella Craggs service aces – to push ISU to an 8-4 advantage. The Knights would get to within one point of the Redbirds at 9-8; however, could not overcome the early lead, as ISU would never trail over the entire match, winning the third set 25-21.
