MACOMB, Ill. — Illinois State soccer closed its nonconference slate with a 3-1 victory over Western Illinois on Sunday afternoon at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The Redbirds improve to 5-1-3 on the season, which is their best nonconference record since going 7-2-2 in 2012.
This is also the first time in school history the Redbirds have completed their nonconference schedule with just one loss.
Illinois State controlled the game offensively from the opening whistle, consistently applying pressure in the attacking third. The Redbirds ended with 24 shots, including 14 on goal.
Three different Redbirds scored in the first 45 minutes. Maggie Dowling struck early, scoring 1:31 into the contest off a free kick at midfield from Kaya Durkee. It marks the sixth fastest goal scored in program history and the fastest since Abby Basler found the net in 1:23 against Missouri State on March 5, 2021.
The second goal came in the 23rd minute as Ava Watson found the bottom center of the net off an assist from Rylann Law. It is Watson's third straight game with a goal, becoming the first Redbird to score in three straight games since Riley O'Brien in 2021.
The third goal of the half came in the 29th minute. Bailey Leach crossed the ball into the box and found Rowann Law, who finished for her second goal of the season.
The three-goal first half marked the first time since 2021 that the Redbirds have scored three or more goals in at least two games in a season.
The Leathernecks found the back of the net in the 89th minute, but the Redbirds held on for the win.
Goalkeeper Madi Valenti made two saves en route to the 18th win of her career, moving her into sole possession of fifth place in program history in career wins.
