EAST LANSING, Mich. – Playing in the Mary Fossum Invitational for the first time since 2004, the Redbirds competed in the second and final round of the tournament, finishing in eighth place as a team in the 36-hole event due to rain cancelling the second round.
ISU finished the second round with a 311, the seventh-best round on the day, and closed the 36 holes with a score of 626. Delaware won the event with a 599, and the Blue Hens were followed by Central Michigan (603), Michigan State (608), Rutgers (609), and Bowling Green (609) in the top five. Findlay (610) and Youngstown State (624) finished just ahead of ISU, with Kennesaw State (632), Florida International (632), Ohio (632), Western Michigan (641), Grand Valley State (648), Oakland (648), and Northern Illinois (654) rounding out the 15 schools in the field.
First-year Redbirds Cora Hirz and Cynthia Lang led ISU on the second day, as each carded a 77, while Alex Sparrow played to a second-round score of 78, Xuan (Hazel) Gao 79, and Reagan Kennedy 81. Hirz, Gao, and Kennedy each tied for 29th, while Sparrow placed in a tie of 48th, and Lang tied for 60th.
Hirz, playing in her second collegiate event, finished her second round with four birdies and five pars. Her eight birdies in the tournament were tied for the most in the field, while her scoring average on par 3's (3.00) was tied for the second-best.
Lang had a birdie and 13 pars during the round, while Sparrow had a birdie and 12 pars for her 78. Gao had 11 pars, and Kennedy a birdie and eight pars for her final round of the tournament.
The Redbirds return to action on October 4 when the team competes at the Coyote Creek Classic, hosted at Coyote Creek Golf Course in Bartonville, Illinois.
