Doornbos, who replaces former assistant coach Rob Beam, served as ISU's student assistant coach last season while completing her undergraduate degree. In that capacity, she worked directly with the Redbirds' outside hitters, managed statistics for practices and matches and helped develop practice plans and scouting reports.

In her new role, Doornbos will coach the Redbird outside hitters, while also overseeing the Point! Illinois State! organization, making travel arrangements, handling community service events and tape exchange. Doornbos will also be heavily involved in recruiting. Doornbos was an outside hitter for the `Birds from 2002-05. She is just the sixth player in Illinois State history to eclipse 1,400 kills in her career (1,436). She was a 2004 and 2005 first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection.

Some of Doornbos' best performances occurred in front of a home crowd at Redbird Arena. She owns the top-three arena point performances in school history. In a win over Valley rival Northern Iowa in 2004, Doornbos scored 30 points to set the all-time standard.

She ranks first all-time in career points (1,704) and points-per-game (4.14) at Illinois State, and is ranked sixth in career kills and 10th in career service aces in the all-time MVC annals. Besides her numerous playing accolades, Doornbos was also awarded the 2005 MVC Most Courageous Award. When she was 17, Doornbos was diagnosed with and overcame thyroid cancer.
