2018

Made Illinois State cross country history, becoming the first ISU cross country men’s student-athlete to qualify individually for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship in back-to-back years…placed 52nd at the NCAA Championships with a personal-best 10K time of 30:10.30, recording the highest NCAA Championship finish in Redbird men's cross country history...his 10K mark also broke the ISU school record...was the top MVC finisher at the NCAA Championship for the second-consecutive year...finished eighth at the NCAA Midwest Regional, notching All-Region honors and securing the region’s third individual qualifying spot for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships…became the first Redbird to earn All-Region honors in consecutive years since Ryan Rutherford did so in 2013 and 2014…helped the ISU men to a 9th place finish out of 31 teams at the NCAA Midwest Regional, their highest regional finish since 2001…earned All-MVC honors for the fourth straight season after placing fourth at the 2018 MVC Championships…only the fourth student-athlete in ISU history and the 16th person in the Valley to earn All-Conference accolades in all four years of career...personal-best 8K time of 24:07.90, that he captured at the MVC Championships, ranks second all-time on the Redbird top-10 list…helped the ‘Birds to a second-place finish at the 2018 MVC Championships…named the MVC Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week on October 16 after posting a 5-mile time of 24:18.70 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals…helped the Redbirds to their highest USTFCCCA Regional Ranking in program history, as they were ranked No. 8 in the Midwest Region four times over the course of the 2018 cross country campaign.

2017

Became the first Redbird to qualify for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in 15 years...recorded a top-100 finish at the NCAA Championships, placing 99th with a 10K time of 30:41.93...time currently ranks fourth on the ISU top-10 list and is the second-fastest time ever run by a Redbird on the championship stage...placed seventh at the NCAA Midwest Regional, garnering All-Region honors and securing the region's fourth individual qualifying spot for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships...earned All-Conference honors for the third straight season after finishing third at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships...third-place finish marks highest championship-finish to date...became only the third Redbird in ISU history to earn All-Conference accolades as a freshman, sophomore, and junior...posted best 8K time of the season at the Louisville Classic, crossing the finish line in 24:29...named MVC Male Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Oct. 3 for this performance.

2016

Earned All-Conference accolades, finishing fourth at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships with a 8K time of 24:42...captured his personal-best 6K at the Hawkeye Invitational where he ran a time of 18:27 and placed ninth overall...finished in the top-15 in five meets this season...ran season-best 10K at the NCAA Midwest Regional, placing 27th with a time of 30:56...earned MVC Scholar-Athlete honors.

2015

Made his mark this season, being named MVC Freshman of the Year...competed in six races during freshman campaign...placed 10th at the MVC Championships with a personal-best 8K time of 24:25…received All-Valley accolades…was the first Redbird to cross the finish line at the NCAA Midwest Regional with a 10K time of 31:16.

2014

Redshirt season.

PRIOR TO ISU

York High School: Three-year letterwinner in cross country and two-year letterwinner in track and field … two-time 3A state champion …named to the All-State track and field team with a ninth-place finish in the 3,200-meter race … 23rd-place at the state cross country meet, earning All-State honors as a junior.

Personal: Born 10/18/1996 … son of John and Dina Mattes … sibling is Megan … plans to major in actuarial science.
