Chris Muras

  • Title
    Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator

Chris Muras begins his third season as Illinois State’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, after being hired by head coach Bob Conkling prior to the 2020 season.

In 2021, Muras and fellow assistant coach Megan Harrington were voted as the MIC Assistant Coaches of the Year after helping the Redbirds to a great season. ISU finished second at the MIC Championships, thanks to all-around champion and MIC Gymnast of the Year Angelica Labat and earned a total of 19 All-MIC honors in the process. Labat and teammate Cameron Topp each qualified for the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional and Labat became the first individual in school history to advance to the NCAA Championships.

Muras’ first season at ISU in 2020 saw the end of the season shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but still featured several highlights. Gabrielle Cooke was named the MIC Co-Senior of the Year and Labat was named the MIC Newcomer of the Year in vote conducted by the league's head coaches. In addition, three Redbirds earned All-MIC honors and the team was named the conference champion on bars with a league high NQS of 48.835.

Muras came to ISU after serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the past two seasons at the Minnesota. Muras helped with practice plans and competition lineups, while also coaching and spotting for gymnasts in multiple events. At the same time, Muras coached for Flips Gymnastics’ optional and elite teams, primarily serving as the uneven parallel bars coach.

A graduate of Winona State, Muras received a dual degree in Spanish and criminal justice. He went on to coach multiple club teams and was the head coach at East Ridge High School. At the high school level, Muras helped multiple athletes compete at the state level and worked with administration to prepare lesson plans and helped fundraise for the high school program.

Muras earned his undergraduate degree from Winona State in 2013 and received a master’s degree in sports management from Minnesota in May of 2019.
