James Durrant joined Illinois State in March of 2022 as the Director of Compliance and Student Services. He is the primary Compliance contact for Women’s Soccer, Baseball, Softball, and Track & Field.

Prior to Illinois State, Durrant was the Assistant Director of Compliance at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. While at Grand Canyon, Durrant was responsible for day-to-day oversight and monitoring of NCAA personnel, amateurism, recruiting, and playing season bylaws. In addition, he assisted with updating compliance policies and procedures and helped create, schedule and manage all NCAA rules education for student-athletes, department and University staff.

After completing course work for his Master of Sports Law and Business degree from Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, he spent time as a compliance intern in the Utah Valley University compliance office. While there, he assisted with NCAA waivers and interpretations, the creation and updating of educational materials for coaches including prep for recruiting certification tests, and revising compliance policies and procedures.

Durrant, a Payson, Utah native, graduated from Utah Valley University with a bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism emphasis and a minor in Digital Media. Prior to earning his master’s degree and venturing into a career in NCAA compliance, he spent 13 years covering University of Utah athletics for UteZone.com, where he served as a writer, photographer and managing editor.
