Kevin Boyer, a finalist for the National Federation of High School Coaches 2000 Coach of the Year award, is joining the Illinois State staff as an assistant cross country and track and field coach.
"In my search I looked for a loyal hard-working person with great values, a person who knows how to take care of people," first year head coach Jeff Pigg said. "Kevin Boyer is caring and understanding and is very competitive. He has the balance I was looking for, and that's what it boils down to."
Boyer joins the staff as short sprints and jumps coach after a ten year stint at Logan Rogersville High School in Rogersville, Mo. Prior to his coaching and teaching days at Rogersville, Boyer attended Southwest Missouri State where he earned his degree in education.
At Rogersville, he earned NFHSC Midwest-section Coach of the Year in 2000, making him one of eight finalists for National Coach of the Year. In 1999 he was the Missouri High School Coach of the Year and was a five-time Southwestern Missouri Coach of the Year.
Boyer's teams included one all-state team and a back-to-back state championship team. He also guided nine athletes to state titles.
"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to coach at the collegiate level, especially at an institution with a history like ISU has," Boyer said. "It's something everyone dreams of. Being given the chance to coach with people like Jeff Pigg and Mary Wallace is great."
"I know that for me to be effective I have to be surrounded by really good people," Pigg said. "Kevin is the type of person who has a good balance of competitiveness and caring, which is exactly what I was looking for."
Boyer and his wife, Allison, reside in Bloomington with their two children, Lindsay, 8, and Ethan, 2.
