Four More Valley Titles for Track and Field Team

Stacia Beste won her second Missouri Valley conference title in as many days while Christian Goy anchored the champion distance medley relay and own the mile to lead the Illinois State mens and womens track and field teams at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The womens squad finished in second-place overall while the mens team completed the weekend in third. Beste capped yesterdays title in the 5,000 with another in the 3,000. Her time of 10:06.14 was 11 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. With two dominating performances, Beste was honored as the 2001 MVC Most Valuable Female Athlete. Goy was named the 2001 MVC Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete after winning the mile in 4:02.10 and running anchor in the distance medley relay. The DMR team of Peter Madsen, Dan Schrock, Robert Breit and Goy covered the course in 9:58.23, good for a first-place conference finish. Christians anchor set the message that we were there to run. He had a tremendous performance,, head coach Jeff Pigg said. We had strong competitions early in the day in the mens and womens throws that set the tone for the day. In womens action, Sam Serrano captured the conference title in the shot put with a 4610 3/4 toss. The womens DMR composed of Lauren Ritt, Andrea Black, Egle Kregzdyte and Beste clocked a school-record 11:46.88 for second-place. Junior Monique Haan placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 395 3/4 while teammate Nicole Blow finished right behind her with a 391 3/4. Kregzdyte took fifth in the 800 with 2:19.01 and sophomore Alia Hoyle finished sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.83. Junior Alfie Gordillo earned his second second-place finish of the weekend with a heave of 546 3/4 in the shot put. Sophomore teammate Harry Lattimore tossed a 504 to take sixth. Peter Madsen claimed third in the mile with a time of 4:10.00 while Lars Juhl finished third in he 3,000 at 8:27.43. Mark Reed finished the 3,00 in fifth an 8:31.63 mark. Illinois State had a strong showing in the triple jump, taking three of the top spots. Freshman Casey Gantt jumped 486 for third with Chivas Hemphill right behind him in fourth with 481 1/4. Placing sixth was freshman Jarod Tobler with a 480 leap. We focused all season on trying to be ready for this weekend, Pigg added. I cant tell you how proud of everyone I am. We competed really well and had fun in the process.
