'Birds Travel to Iowa State Track & Field Classic

The Illinois State mens and womens track and field teams square off against many of the nations top teams Friday and Saturday at the 11th annual Iowa State Track & Field Classic in Ames, Iowa. This is a very big meet for us this weekend, head coach Jeff Pigg said. Great competitors bring out great performances. Our athletes are ready to go and are excited to go compete against some of the top teams from coast to coast. The womens field features 750 athletes from 56 teams including top 25 teams Georgia, Illinois, Kansas State, Minnesota, Stanford, Texas-El Paso and UCLA. Competing in the mens division will be 950 athletes from 70 squads, including Alabama, Georgia, Indiana State, Kansas, Northern Iowa and Stanford from the top 25. All Missouri Valley Conference schools will be competing in the meet, as well. Iowa State has a 300 meter track so the turns arent nearly as tight, Pigg said. This meet could produce some of the fastest times in the country. Events begin at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon with the weight throw, 5,000-meter run, long jump, distance medley relay, pole vault, and the 200-meter dash. Remaining events will be held on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
