Redbirds Return To Iowa For Second Straight Week

Coming off competition at the Drake Relays last weekend, the Illinois State Track and Field teams return to action on Saturday at the Iowa Twilight Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. With teams like Iowa and Minnesota competing its an awfully good meet, head coach Jeff Pigg said. We look at it as another chance to turn in some good performances. With only a few people competing last weekend at the Drake Relays, only Stacia Beste, who ran the 10,000 meters, and Lars Juhl, who ran the 5,000 meters last weekend, will have the weekend off according to Pigg. The last couple weeks weve had a few people competing and others have had the weekend off, so it will be nice to compete as a full team, Pigg said. Christian Goy will participate in the mens 1,500 meters after leading the Redbirds to a fourth place finish in the mens distance medley relay last weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. Also coming off a strong performance last weekend is Kathrine Nielsen who tied for eighth in the womens high jump after tying her personal best of 5 9 1/4. While Monique Haan and Nicole Blow both set new season bests in the triple jump. This will be the first time we are really competing as a whole team this season, Pigg said. This will also serve as a final tune-up for the Missouri Valley Conference Championships. Were going to take next weekend off, let everyone concentrate on finals and then gear up for the conference meet. The Redbirds will be lining up with Iowa, Minnesota and Wichita State when action begins at 5:15 p.m. at Cretzmeyer Track with the discus and hammer throws. The running events begin at 6 p.m. with the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
